2025 Summer Program

The Mill River is a perfect site to emulate the thoughtful treatment of light, water, and atmosphere, and mood that the Dutch Landscape painters were able to capture “en plein air.”

We will study and explore the works and styles of renowned Dutch artists such as Salomon van Ruysdael, Jan van Goyen of the 17th century as well as 19th century Romantic landscape artists like Andreas Schelthout, B.C. Koekkoek, and Lauwrens Hanedoes. We will also explore the Hague School’s, “mood images” and their own unique response to how they view nature. Finally, take a look at modern Dutch landscape paintings by Van Gogh, Mondriaan, and more.

Explore the outdoors in our backyard, East Rock Park, along the Mill River. Here you will be guided to sketch, paint, and observe your environment in a renewed way with brush strokes inspired by these brilliant artists who painted and created not too far from where we reside.

Build your own portable easel, palette, and paint box to store your paints, brushes, pencils, and other materials. The portfolio you make will be filled with your interpretations of the world around you. Exhibit your works at the end of the week and invite family and friends to enjoy your creations.

This camp includes a field trip to the Yale University Art Gallery. A $25 transportation fee is included in the price of this camp.
